Unleashing collective learning with the Change Canvas, a shared language of analysis and action planning for your change initiative

In your current work for change, do you struggle to communicate the big picture so that people understand how all the puzzle pieces fit together? When you engage with others in your work for change, are you unable to encourage others to really contribute to your vision? Do you spend more time developing/debating ideas rather than testing them in the real world?
The Change Canvas is a visual framework that frames strategic conversations about change with large groups. It turns the complexity of organizational change into the simplicity of a visual, step-by-step process of filling in 10 boxes.
The Change Canvas was created to address the issues above by drawing on the author’s consulting work in change initiatives, graduate teaching on change management at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, and lived experiences leading organizational change as a manager. Inspired by design thinking and powered by the practical wisdom and insights on change from the Adaptive Leadership framework, the Change Canvas embodies the stances of radical inclusion, large group methods, and the ongoing experiential learning of action research.
As a practical tool for change-makers, the Change Canvas facilitates sense-making for organizational change, learning, and innovation and can help in a variety of change initiatives. Join us in a fast-paced, hands-on session to learn:
- How to deconstruct your organization change in to 10 key components
- How to validate and de-risk you change analysis/strategy for consistency to avoid wasting time on efforts that are doomed to fail
- How to focus your change strategy meetings and avoid misunderstandings by building psychological ownership that mobilizes a variety of stakeholders and enrolls them in your work.
- How to institutionalize a Change Canvas Huddle, an ongoing learning process that invites people to both find holes in and enrich your analysis/strategy for change.
Participants will receive two sample Change Canvases from “Jack” and “Lisa” (fictional names of real clients) to experience how the model increases success by forcing change-makers to:
- Put in writing assumptions about how change will play out, simplifying the critical work of developing, sharing, and testing plans
- Stay focused on both analysis AND action in their change initiatives, to avoid turning their work for change into a faith-based journey driven by righteousness;
- Uphold a strong vision while keeping at the center facts, observed behaviors, or actual events—not just conviction in the quality of the initial thinking
- Stress-test ideas about change before implementation to minimize personal and organizational risk, increase chances of success, and protect reputations.

Adriano Pianesi is a passionate innovator, facilitator and design thinker with experience in a variety of settings ranging from technology, education, health care, non-profit, and international organizations. He holds certificates in design thinking from a variety of institutions both in the US and abroad, including LUMA Institute, the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business, and IDEO. He frequently runs workshops on design thinking, and he is currently on the faculty of the Carey School of Business, where he teaches the 2 and 3 day courses "Designing Your Life" on designing for personal change and "Experiential Design in the Class," a hands-on experiential practicum for trainers.
